There's a foot and a half of snow on the ground. Icicles are dangling from tree branches. Everyone outside in Sunriver is buddled in mittens, hats and thick parkas and the thermostat reads 12 degrees. So why will over 100 people dress down to their swimsuits and jump into an icy 38 degree pool on New Year's Day in Sunriver? It remains a mystery. But rest assured, for those wanting/willing/needing to partake in the Polar Bear Plunge, our grounds crew is busy getting the pool ready today. Happy New Year!
Central Oregon and the Sunriver area are seeing some of the best early season skiing conditions in years. Mt. Bachelor, 20 minutes from Sunriver Resort, already has an 85" base of dry, fluffy, Central Oregon snow.
This shot was taken from Crosswater in Sunriver a few days ago.
With all of the recent early winter snow we've seen in Sunriver, we asked our Facebook followers what they liked best about Central Oregon and Sunriver Resort in the winter. Below were some of their replies:
- Skiing at Mt. Bachelor - Ice skating - Snowshoeing along the river - Cross country skiing - Just soaking up the peace and serenity - Watching the animals in the snow - Hot tubbing while the snow falls - Sleigh rides - Sipping hot cocoa by the firepit - Hanging in the Owl's Nest with a hot adult beverage
Thanks to everyone who participated in the annual Gingerbread Junction at Sunriver Resort. We raised over $2,800 for The Education Foundation for Bend-La Pine Schools. Gingerbreads will be on display through December 26 in the lodge.
The Sunriver Village Mall has been going through an extensive remodel for the past year, including a complete overhaul of the ice skating rink in the middle of the shopping area. This past weekend was the grand reopening of the skating rink and it looks great! (Photo below).
Recent storms in the high desert have brought considerable snowfall to Sunriver over the last few weeks. Over a foot of snow is currently on the ground, which is above average for this time of year (nearby Mt. Bachelor has a 53" base). Warmer weather is in the immediate forecast which will melt some of the white stuff in Sunriver, but right now we're enjoying the winter wonderland here in Central Oregon.
Photo below of the Cardinal Bridge over the Deschutes River was taken this morning.
