Back in 1943, the US Army claimed an area of land in Central Oregon on a meadow near the Deschutes River and called it Camp Abbot. They used the camp as training grounds and built a magnificent log building for their Officer's Club. That meadow is now part of Sunriver Resort and the Officer's Club is now the Great Hall, a premier Northwest meeting space.

We're still two months away from the official start of winter, but here in Sunriver and Central Oregon, we're unofficially declaring it here this week. Below is the view from the Sunriver Resort lodge this morning, 10/27/10, looking west - almost three feet of snow on Mt. Bachelor!

Fall is a tricky season in Sunriver and Central Oregon. One day you could be playing a round of golf in 70 degree weather, marveling at the fall colors. The next day you could be sitting in the lodge sipping hot cocoa watching the snow descend on the course you just played. We had our first snowfall of the season this week with a couple of inches on the ground in Sunriver and almost three feet piling up at nearby Mt. Bachelor.

Don't let the warm, dry fall season fool you. Most of Oregon's meterorologists and climatolgists are forecasting a colder and wetter than normal winter in Oregon due to La Nina effect this season. Which of course means, MORE SNOW! And not just any kind of snow, but fluffier, "powderier" snow that Central Oregon and Mt. Bachelor is known for.

We spent 48 hours in and around Sunriver this summer with a Canon 5D Mark II camera and a couple of lenses, attempting to capture the natural beauty of the area on video. We condensed the footage down to three minutes below.
Back in 1968, the developers of Sunriver Resort wanted to create a resort community that discouraged auto travel and encouraged folks to get on their bikes. 35 miles of paved, level bike paths wind through Sunriver's 3,300 acres and for decades bikes have been the preferred method of transport. It's no wonder why so many kids come to Sunriver to learn to ride. Below are some first time biking stories from Sunriver visitors.
