Sunriver Resort’s Gingerbread Junction Raises More Than $2,000 for Charity

The Sunriver Resort 2011 Gingerbread Junction Gingerbread Village raised $2,330 for St. Charles Foundation’s Children’s Heart Fund through the sale of nearly 40 “lots” and matching contributions from Sunriver Resort. A check was presented to the Children’s Heart Fund by Sunriver Resort Managing Director Tom O’Shea at an award ceremony for the winners of the Gingerbread Junction contest on Wednesday, December 7. Two primary winners were recognized at the afternoon event – the People’s Choice Overall Winner and the People’s Choice Children’s Winner — which were selected during the People’s Choice Awards Voting held during the annual Grand Illuminations lighting ceremony at the Resort. A judging panel of community members chose the remaining first, second and third places in each of the 12 categories.  “Entries for this year’s competition are more unique than ever before,” said Event Director Debra Martyn-Jones, who mentioned cinematic (representations of popular films “Up”, “The Nightmare before Christmas” and “Harry Potter” were present), cultural (a rendition of an In-N-Out Burger Drive-through, an “Occupy Camp Runamuck” depicting animals protesting), and appetizing (Ghost Tree Dinner on the Range Participants, such as Aspen Lakes, 5 Fusion and the Sunriver Resort Owl’s Nest Bar & Grill were all 100% edible) concoctions as proof.  Gingerbread Junction is part of Sunriver Resort’s annual Traditions festival, which features a variety of holiday-themed events and activities from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. The houses will be on display at the Sunriver Resort Main lodge until January 1, 2012. Read More

Luxury Sunriver Resort Spa Named Among World’s Best

(Sunriver, Ore.) — Sunriver Resort’s Sage Springs Club and Spa was listed as a Best Resort Spa in the 2011 Condé Nast Traveler’s poll, ranking 69th in the annual readers’ choice survey that garners more than 25,000 responders each year. Globally recognized as a benchmark for excellence in the travel and tourism industry, the Readers’ Choice Travel Awards include various divisions, including Top Islands, Top Cities and Top Hotels. The Best Resort Spa category reflects ratings on three criteria: Spa Facilities, Spa Staff and Spa Treatments, and compares the responses with those of competitors worldwide.  “We are honored to be part of such an impressive register of Resorts,” said Sage Springs Director Devon Scanlon. “We feel this is a reflection of both our impressive facility, but also the impeccable service that we strive to provide each and every guest who visits Sunriver Resort.” This marks the 21st year for the annual poll, which began in 1990 as a “Top 3” listing and has grown to include the “Top 250” spas around the world. According to the Condé Nast Traveler’s Web site, winners range in size, offering, focus, and price point, but “the lofty standards to which our readers hold each candidate” remain. Among the trends noted by Condé Nast Traveler in the 2011 polls were techniques already adopted at Sage Springs Spa and Sunriver Resort, including eco-friendly offerings, social media communication with guests, and a focus on holistic rejuvenation. Dates are Set for SHARC Water Park Grand Opening!

Sunriver Resort has exciting new experiences to share in 2012 -- including Memorial Day Weekend’s grand opening of the SHARC (Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center) Complex, situated on a 22-acre site near Beaver Drive, Theater Drive and Overlook Road. Construction of this exciting project began in February 2011. Most of the facility will be open to the general public year-round, including: indoor and outdoor recreation pools, a 15-person outdoor adult hot tub, outdoor lazy river, water slides, tot pool, sand play area, indoor/outdoor café, picnic areas, playground, basketball courts, bocce ball, year-round turf tubing hills (with 3 custom runs with speeds that range from “gentle” to “bomber fast”), event/meeting rooms and an outdoor amphitheater that can accommodate up to 1,000 attendees! From its groundbreaking in February 2011, workers have labored to deliver the SHARC facility to the Sunriver Resort community on-schedule for its opening day in May 2012. The entire Sunriver community shares in the energy that this colossal, state-of-the-art recreation facility will bring to the area. Sunriver’s beloved South Pool, the traditional hub of outdoor summer activity for 40+ years, had sadly begun to show its age. At the close of the 2011 summer, even as the community gave a fond farewell to the old South Pool complex, excitement was palpable for the new SHARC complex. Groups and families alike are already confirming their Summer 2012 reservations in order to be among the first visitors to experience SHARC firsthand.  From all accounts, SHARC is the place to be this summer, and many more to come. So, we will “see you on the slides” very soon! By Suzanne Conditt Read More

Lazy float down the Marina

I'll never forget one late, hot summer afternoon I rented a single person kayak from the Sunriver marina and floated down the Deschutes river on my back for 3 hours; eagles and osprey soaring overhead and the fish jumping all around. Probably the most peaceful I've ever felt. Every once in a while I could hear a family's laughter echoing in the canyons and then they would float by me in a raft. They would pass and I would feel like I was the only one on the river again. It was great! Read More

Early Spring for Sunriver Golf?

The groundhog did not see his shadow and the Sunriver Resort greens are free of snow (for now).  Things may be pointing toward an early spring for golf this season but it’s never smart to speak too soon when it comes to Central Oregon weather. While we're waiting for the official open of the 2011 golfing season, here are a few winter golf tips to make sure your game is ready when spring arrives in full swing. Read More

Best Golf Experience on the Woodlands

I was finishing up on the 3rd hole over at the spectacular Woodlands golf course, (flowers were blooming/just got a stiff drink from the extremely cute beverage cart gal) as my foursome and I pull up to the green there were 3 deer hanging by the green. We parked and I thought they would scatter but they were so calm and I guess used to people being around them that they weren't bothered. They hung around and kept grazing while we putted out and finished the hole. Wish I had my camera.. Read More

Fall River my Favorite Place in the World

My favorite memory, and place to go in Sunriver is Fall River. It is a ten minute drive from the Resort, and you feel like you are in the middle of Narnia. Going there really allows me to experience all the beauty of truly trekking it in the Great Pacific North West. From driving to the forest, to turning onto the bump, dirt forest road (I always enter from the forest road), to the short hike along the river where you pass some log cabin ruins.and finally, ending at the fall. It is the perfectly small waterfall where you can fly fish, pick nick, tan, and even tie a raft up and float out in the crystal green lagoon at the base of the fall all day. Not to mention, I get to bring the pups and seeing them that happy makes my day. This is truly ne of my favorite spots in the world. Read More

North Twin Lake

An incredible day trip from Sunriver Resort is North Twin Lake about a 20 mile drive. Great place for picnicking, swimming and fishing. My family loves the peacefulness, the kids stroll down the sandy beach while the guys are out in the boat fishing for trout. No motors are allowed on the lake so no worries about the kids in the water. Wonderful for spending quality family time. You can build fires on the shoreline.. Very relaxing and enjoyable. Worth the drive out. Read More

The Ultimate Golf Challenge - 75 Holes in One Day

Growing up playing the Sunriver Resort Golf courses likely qualifies me as a spoiled child.  Living on Woodlands #13 (previously #4) has always given me an inner pride in the Sunriver golf landscape, and two summers working in the Golf Outside Services department gave me plenty of opportunities to strut my confidence around. I have played the golf holes at Sunriver Resort more times than I can even begin to count.   Playing them all in one day, however, is a completely different ballgame. Read More

Sunriver Resort Golf Embraces Tee it Forward Philosophy

Barney Adams, the CEO of Adams Golf, has always championed the idea of making the game of golf more enjoyable for the average golfer.  An average golfer himself, Adams came to the conclusion earlier this year that the game of golf was not as enjoyable as he would like it to be.  After conducting thorough research about why many do not enjoy golf as much as other activities, Adams found that among the top reasons were because it is too hard.  With an arsenal of new information, Adams teamed with the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association to launch a program called Tee It Forward. Junior Golf Should Be FUN

Having been in golf for nearly 20 years, my fondest memories are of my days as a junior when scores and advanced technique mattered all too little.  Looking back, it seems that the most appropriate word to describe those experiences is FUN.  Since then, I have been fortunate to work closely with juniors of all ages and have come to realize that the most important ingredient introducing young people to golf is indeed FUN.  For many juniors, the introduction to the game comes with clubs that do not fit and technical instruction that leads to misunderstanding and frustration. At Sage Springs Spa Men Can Get Pampered Too

Working for a resort and booking meetings, incentives and retreats, I tend to keep up on all aspects of resort amenities and offerings.  Everywhere you turn these days, there are articles about resort spa’s, and spa’s in general, catering to men these days.  It is more socially acceptable for men to choose spa over golf when on site for an event or incentive.  Heck, my 67 year old father  just told me the other day that he went and got a pedicure with my mom.  And asked if he would do it again and he said “In a heartbeat, my feet were so soft.”  My dad?!  If you knew him as I, you would be surprised too and listening to him explain the whole experience was hilarious.  But, the matter of the fact is, that it is ok for men to go to the spa an get pampered too.  And our Sage Spring Club and Spa is one of the best at this.  Read More

Right outside of Sunriver proper there are miles of single-track and dirt trails perfect for a good morning trail run. And this morning, I decided to give some of that dirt a try.  Read More

Once our camera is loaded with great shots, we head back to the Outpost, Sunriver Resort's art center, and choose our medium. While the choices of mediums are glass, ceramics or acrylics, glass is by far the most popular choice!  Read More

Skiing in July in Central Oregon

Now, I am not exactly what you would call an avid skier.  I actually learned to ski this year during Mt. Bachelor’s Ski and Ride in Five Program.  I learned to ski in five lessons and then skied twice a week for the rest of the season…it really is great to live in Central Oregon and work at Sunriver Resort.  When I found out Mt. Bachelor was opening for the Fourth of July weekend, I jumped at the chance to ski in July.  Read More

New Calendar Year, New Business Strategy: The Value of an Annual “Kickoff” Meeting

After spending the last week of 2011 on vacation with family and friends and enjoying way too many treats, I found it hard to return to the everyday grind of work this week. With the season of overindulgence behind us comes the urge to clean, purge, refresh and invigorate one’s life.  We hit the gym, eat salad, delete more emails and start a new list of to-do’s in the new year. For our team the best method to recharge and start the year off the right way is to host a one-day kickoff meeting where we escape the office to the cozy living room of a Sunriver Resort home to reconnect and focus on our goals for the coming year. I encourage you to begin the year with a fresh outlook and unified strategy by hosting a team meeting in the first month of 2012. Sunriver Resort caters to small team meetings with an executive meetings package that makes booking simple. Call today and ask for one of our executive meeting specialists. Happy New Year from all of us at Sunriver Resort! Read More

Read More

The Haunted Hall at Sunriver Resort

Back in 1943, the US Army claimed an area of land in Central Oregon on a meadow near the Deschutes River and called it Camp Abbot. They used the camp as training grounds and built a magnificent log building for their Officer's Club. That meadow is now part of Sunriver Resort and the Officer's Club is now the Great Hall, a premier Northwest meeting space. Read More

Return Visitors to Fort Funnigan at Sunriver Resort

One of my favorite things about working at Sunriver Resort is the people that come back year after year. We have an entire season here we call Traditions and it embraces what I am talking about: families coming to Sunriver Resort the same time each year for vacation. Working in the Recreation Department I have had the opportunities to meet countless families while they participate in our programs; I get to see children grow up and learn exciting family news that happened during the last year since I saw them last. 4,078 Bars of Soap Goes a Long Way - Sunriver Resort Helps to Clean the World

Have you ever wondered what happens to the soap you leave behind in your guest room?  Or what about that small bottle of shampoo?  Does it really just go into the trash?  In the United States alone, over 1.5 million bars of gently used soap are thrown away every day. At the same time, it is estimated that 9,000 children a day die from diseases that can be prevented by simple hand washing. The Housekeeping department at Sunriver Resort was not ok with these statistics and decided to do something about it. Read More

Cleaning the World With Soap from Sunriver Resort

As a participating property in the 'Clean the World' program based in Orlando, Florida, Sunriver Resort donated 310.7 lbs of soap and 253 lbs of bottled amenities in the first quarter of 2011. This was enough soap to keep 144 children clean for an entire month! Additionaly, 564 lbs of waste was diverted from Central Oregon landfills. Approximately 3.5 million children under the age of 5 will die this year due to pneumonia and diarrheal disease.  65% of these deaths could be prevented through simple hand washing. We're extremely proud to partner with the Clean the World program to help as many of these children survive as we can. Read More

Sunriver Resort is helping to save lives... one soap at a time

This January, the Housekeeping Department at Sunriver Resort became a hospitality partner of Clean the World. By turning in soaps and amenities that the guests left behind, we are not only recycling, but also saving lives.  All soap and amenities, which are usually just discarded, will be donated to the Clean the World program in Orlando, FL.  From there the amenities will be collected, sorted and sanitized.  The amenities will then make their way to domestic homeless shelters and impoverished countries suffering from high death rates as a result of acute respiratory infection and diarrheal disease because they have no soap. How to Spot an Owl in Sunriver

Sunriver Resort is surrounded by millions of acres of national forest land, hundreds of rivers and streams and miles of high desert country to the east. So wildlife sightings are extremely common here. But some creatures are a little more elusive than others, such as the Great Horned Owl. We received a good tip from one of our Facebook followers, James Barnett today on how to spot a tree with an owl in it. "Look at the ground. If you see an abnormal amount of shaved conifer cone, look up. There may be an owl." Our Director of Agronomy spotted these two baby Great Horned Owls the other day in a tree near Crosswater.
