Everyone who visits Sunriver Resort has more than likely seen the airplanes parked across the meadow at the Sunriver airport.
However, few realize that this airport is actually one of the busiest private airstrips west of the Mississippi River with over 200,000 takeoffs and/or landings every year ranging from small single engine propeller planes and large private jets, to helicopters and gliders.
The airport was built by the developers of Sunriver Resort nearly 40 years ago to increase the resort's appeal as a fly-in destination. It sees the majority of its use from a mix of residents, resort guests and families, and group/conference clientele who enjoy the convenience of being able to fly directly to the resort rather than to Roberts Field or Bend Municipal Airport.
A few weeks ago during the JELD-WEN Tradition golf tournament, the airport saw 480 takeoffs and/or landings in 6 days. The airport crew estimated the total value of jets and planes that landed in Sunriver during the golf tournament at over $270,000,000!
