Wildlife encounters in Sunriver are extremely common - elk, porcupines, eagles, coyotes, deer and owls can all be seen in single early morning bike ride. It is fairly uncommon, however, to see these animals interact.
This morning a family of coyotes were chasing three deer near Lake Aspen, most likely engaging in a behavior known as “practice hunting”. According to our Sunriver Nature Center experts, there are plenty of mice and squirrels to eat in the meadows and fields in the area so there is no need for coyotes to hunt larger game. The deer in the video below weren’t so sure. Watch at :20 as they jump into the lake to escape (view full screen).
