Volunteering at the Kid's Mini Pole Pedal Paddle
The Kid's Mini Pole Pedal Paddle Race is an annual fundraiser in support of the MBSEF (Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation) held each year in May. MBSEF is a non-profit organization whose guiding philosophy is to encourage academic achievement and promote the positive values of competitive Alpine, Cross Country, Snowboarding/Freeride, and Cycling. Our involvement began over seventeen years ago through our affiliation with another nonprofit organization, RCRA (Resort and Commercial Recreation Association). Although RCRA still exists today, they disbanded regional support of this event and Sunriver Resort's small recreation team picked up where they left off.
Sunriver Resort’s Recreation Division has been the primary organizer of volunteers and facilitator of the race for the past fifteen years. Our team of three is fortunate to have strong relationships with other resort associates and local high school honor society groups who graciously give up their day to support this very worthy cause. Naturally, being recreators, we firmly believe in the philosophy of MBSEF and enjoy being a part of an event that mixes white water rafting, cycling, an enormous obstacle course and running. The initial tone of this race is that of pure competition, however, the underlying message is cooperation, comradery, cheerleading . . . TEAM SPIRIT.
Through the years this race has grown to over 1,200 children (first grade to sixth) and over the past 15 years we have been a part of this memorable event for thousands more (plus their parents).
Despite the long hours invested in finding volunteers, gathering equipment and facilitating the race, we are all encouraged to come back each and every year. We like to think that in some small way we are contributing to the positive development of the youth in our community. Give someone a dollar and they spend it. . . give someone an experience and they are changed forever!
