Frost delays become more frequent this time of year in Sunriver. Why can’t we tee off if there is frost on the ground?
Frost is essentially frozen dew, and since 90% of a grass blade is water, the grass blade normally freezes as well. If we walk on the grass while there is still frost it ruptures the cell walls, killing the plant. This is especially critical on putting greens because of the short mowing height, consequently resulting in a more fragile plant. Since, the course is set up and mowed prior to play, it is especially critical for golf maintenance crews to not perform maintenance functions with heavy machinery when the grass is susceptible to such extreme damage.
Sunriver Resort has a frost delay number (541-593-7880) to check whether tee times are on time every morning. With average temperatures in the 60’s-70’s throughout September and October there is still a lot of great golf left in Central Oregon, just be aware of those sporadic frost delays in the morning.
