Among my favorite events at Sunriver Resort, is Free Fishing Day at Caldera Springs. Hosted annually during the month of June, Sunriver Resort, The Sunriver Anglers, The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Deschutes National Forest, and Caldera Springs host 250 youth from the surrounding community at Obsidian Lake for this lively one-day event.
This year being no exception, the lake was stocked with rainbow trout for the June 9 festivities, and no one went home disappointed. There were plenty of fish for everyone!
Even the majestic views pale in comparison to the expression on a young child’s face after catching that first fish. Other activities included information from salmon experts, fun fish printing and tattoo booths, live displays of fish and other aquatic life, talks on fish anatomy, direction on spin and fly casting, and the famous “Talking Trout!”
All of the fishing activity was followed up with a lunch of hot dogs, chips, soda and cookies. Everyone enjoyed themselves; and we are all looking forward to another day of fishing next spring at Caldera Springs.
