The Smith family kindly shared their Sunriver Realty story of 30 years of visiting Sunriver and the five homes they now own here.
Our Sunriver Journey - An owner’s story
How do you get from the Cluster Cabins to Caldera Springs? For Randy and Barbara Smith, that journey has taken more than 30 years.
The Smith family first discovered Sunriver from a co-worker who had rented a home here. They heard about the extensive bike trails and sunshine, and thought it would be a perfect vacation spot for their young family.
Their first rental experience was in 1980 at a Cluster Cabin - the rustic detached units on Sunriver’s south end. They loved Sunriver from the start. Their two children learned to bike here because their home in Seattle was on hilly street that was too steep and dangerous for their fledgling cyclists. They also enjoyed the whitewater rafting on the Deschutes and sunny family skiing on the slopes of Mt. Bachelor.
The vacations to Sunriver continued year after year. Why Sunriver, instead of other destinations nearer to home? “There is nothing like Sunriver,” says Barbara. “It offers better summertime activities - more variety. And a superior ski area to anything near home. Being close to Bend is great - shopping, restaurants and cultural activities so close.”
In the late 80’s they purchased a vacant lot to “have a foothold in Sunriver,” according to Randy. “We were convinced that values would go up over the long term.”
In 2007 they noticed a for sale sign on a Meadow House. “We called Sunriver Realty and wanted to see Meadow House 33. The unit needed some upgrading, but we saw the possibilities right away.”
After an extensive remodel to their Meadow House, the Smith’s discovered Caldera Springs. They are now completing their new home on Trailmere Loop, which will be their seasonal residence.
In all, the Smiths have completed five real estate transactions over their 30 year connection to Sunriver. Randy says, “We’ve always been happy working with Sunriver Realty. Their people are receptive, helpful and professional.”
