2009 Golf Season in Review
As Central Oregon winds up its final few rounds of the 2009 golf season let’s take a brief look back at the season’s highlights.
It proved to be an unusual year for the PGA Tour in terms of major championships. Angel Cabrera was the only previous major champion to win a major as he won his second major at Augusta through unusual heroics, overcoming his tree ricocheted shot on the final hole. The other three major champions were all newcomers: Lucas Glover (US Open Champion), Stewart Cink (British Open Champion), and YE Yang (PGA Champion).
We got our usual drama out of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods but we had to wait until the final round of the Fed Ex Cup to see it. Phil Mickelson took home the victory at the Tour Championship even though Tiger Woods hoisted the Fed Ex Cup at the end of the afternoon.
But the key highlight for the game in 2009 may not even be Tiger’s heroics, overcoming a torn ACL to win six times on tour. It may have to be golf becoming an Olympic sport, as it was added as the 28th sport to the docket for the 2016 Olympics.
And at Sunriver Resort, the highlight may have to be Brad Bryant’s ten under par, course record 62 at Crosswater during the JELD-WEN Tradition golf tournament. He was unable to hold off Mike Reid from his second major on the Champions Tour, but what an amazing round to witness. Looking forward to next year's tournament.
