Sunriver Resort Report

As a pet-friendly resort for more than a decade, Sunriver Resort has welcomed the latest wedding trend of making furrier family members part of your special day.

Here are several ways to incorporate pets into your wedding events, and a few tips to help make their inclusion successful.

1.     Pets in your wedding party

According to the website Petside.com, one of the most traditional ways to include pets is as ring bearer or flower dog. This works well with well-trained, smallish pets, but be sure to run through the ceremony a few of times in advance.

Tip: Be careful with the pet clothes! There are a lot of choices for pets to dress for the day, but not all of them are realistic. Try a dress rehearsal to ensure that your pet is likely to cooperate with his chosen attire.

 2.     Pets and the wedding march

Since even the most well-trained pet can become intimidated by a wedding crowd, it is best to have a family member carry or lead your pet down the aisle, and hold or stand next to them during the ceremony. Another option is to place them in a carrier where they can watch, once they have done their ceremonial duties.

Tip: Have your pet carried in a basket or on a pillow for a special touch.

3.     Pets in your wedding vows

If it isn’t feasible for your pet to attend the wedding, make them part of your ceremony by having the officiator mention them, or writing them into your vows. A story correlating your love and your pets is a great way to keep the ceremony lively. Finally, incorporating nicely framed pictures in your ceremony or reception area is a nice touch.

Tip: If you want your pet at your wedding or reception, ask the venue if they will allow pet before you decide on your wedding location. This may help you decide on which location is best for you.

4.     Pets and your wedding photos

Pets make a wonderful addition to wedding party or family photos. It is best to have a handler manage your pet before and after the photo session to keep excitable pets photo-ready.

Tip: For pointers on getting pets to pose like a pro, check out this Petside video Tips on Taking the Perfect Pet Picture.

5.     Pets and your wedding reception

Consider making arrangements for your pet to spend time away from the reception during a meal service, if possible, since the lure of the buffet can overwhelm even well-behaved pets. Otherwise, receptions are a great time to include pets in your wedding fun! Outdoor gatherings are especially nice since they allow room to roam

Tip: Maintain a sense of humor! As with any component of a wedding, something is bound to go awry. We suggest that everyone in your wedding party stay mindful to keep things in perspective. And just remember, at the end of the day, you will be married either way!
