The groundhog did not see his shadow and the Sunriver Resort greens are free of snow (for now). Things may be pointing toward an early spring for golf this season but it’s never smart to speak too soon when it comes to Central Oregon weather. While we're waiting for the official open of the 2011 golfing season, here are a few winter golf tips to make sure your game is ready when spring arrives in full swing.
There are 3 areas golfers should concentrate on to maximize their ability: strength, flexibility and endurance.
Sit-ups, crunches, and lower back exercises are good to strengthen your core muscles, which are important in increasing club head speed. Swinging a weighted club can help strengthen golf specific muscles and help with flexibility.
Yoga, by far, is the best thing for flexibility. Check out “Yoga for Golf,” videos or classes if you are serious about increasing your flexibility.
Lastly, the best thing golfers can do for endurance is walk. Walk at home in your spare time and walk the course when you play. Walking keeps the blood flowing, where riding in a cart gives your body time to stiffen up. If you can, make it a goal for this upcoming season to dedicate yourself to walking instead of riding.
We look forward to seeing you on the links in the spring.
