Dirt Trail Running in Sunriver
Sunriver is a runner’s paradise. With thirty plus miles of paved bike paths, you can run for days on pavement. These bike paths make races like the Pacific Crest, Sunriver Marathon for a Cause, and the annual 4th of July Fun Run a breeze. But there is more to run on than just the pavement. Right outside of Sunriver proper there are miles of single-track and dirt trails perfect for a good morning trail run. And this morning, I decided to give some of that dirt a try.
I started out from the Benham Falls trailhead at the north end of Sunriver and took the single-track route through the woods and down to the Deschutes River. At 1.5 miles, the trail meets the river near the Marina take out. I took a breather here, before I turned back and watched as an osprey work to catch his morning feast. In the early morning, this a magical spot for a little bit of solitude and reflection.
I kept it short today and chose to turn around from here; knowing there wasn’t much that could top my osprey sighting. If your legs are felling a little stronger, you could keep on following the single-track trail down to the Benham Falls Day-Use Site (2.6 miles from the trailhead) and a little bit further past that and you will actually reach the falls; keep going and it is 15-miles to Bend.
My tip for this stretch of trail is to head out early in the morning before the mountain bikers get there and people start landing at the marina take-out.
