The Sunriver Marathon for a Cause was recently listed by Race Center Magazine as one of their Top 10 “Hardest Races You’ll Ever Love” in the Pacific Northwest. Like anything worthwhile in life, our races offer opportunities and challenges. Here, we provide a quick rundown of common race challenges to help you navigate our events.
Temperature: The key to navigating our temperatures involves three words: layers, layers, layers. September in Sunriver is generally the ideal time to run with us – cool, crisp mornings lead to gently warming afternoons. The dry heat rarely gets to blazing temperatures; generally, the thermostat peaks around 80 degrees well after our racers have crossed the finish line.
Elevation: Sunriver lies at 4,200 ft, and coastal visitors say that they notice it at times. To be fair, we hear elevation feedback most often from shorter, faster races than we do after distance events. Moreover, for the many runners who race with us to prepare for upcoming events, our elevation is a major benefit.
Turns: The turns in our course have been both praised and pilloried, so each runner must decide for himself where this falls. We hear that our courses are certainly more interesting than long and straight city runs. Every turn on a Sunriver course presents a new pastoral view and the opportunity for a tranquil encounter with native wildlife.
Surfaces: We think one of the greatest benefits of our races is that most of the distance is run on paved bike paths. No cars whizzing past, no rocky trails, and no soft surfaces that tax your calves and hip flexors unduly.
