Back in 1968, two years before Earth Day started, visionaries John Gray and Don McCallum gave an interview that talked about their new development in Central Oregon called "Sunriver". Below is an excerpt from that interview. Happy Earth Day!
"In the past 20-30 years, the entire environment that we live in is not controlled by the human and natural community and how we interact with each other, it's been controlled by where the roads and utilities go. Sunriver doesn't do that. In Sunriver, nature, conservation and the human society and how they meld together allows things to happen that haven't happened in cities in a long time. People will rediscover nature and that's built into the framework of this place. People come here from all walks of life, all ages. The thing that knits them together is a kind of respect for nature, a new kind of cultural environment, but they all know on a practical side that the air is clean and that they are surrounded by thousands of acres of forest land, a hundred lakes. In a very poetic way, I think that Sunriver will show people that there's something else besides the status quo in the cities and suburbia."
