The 2009 US Open Championship will be hosted at Bethpage Black this week. The only municipal facility to ever host a US Open Championship was referred to as "Deathpage" in 2002 as Tiger Woods was its only surrendered victim to an under par finish. US Open Director Mike Davis is priding this week's set-up as being a brutal but fair challenge. Remember the tragedy at the 7th hole of Shinnecock Hills in 2004 that left players such as Jeff Maggert purposely hitting their tee shot in the front left bunker? Mike Davis feels he has eliminated "unfair" as being a part of the US Open challenge this week. Playing at 7,416 yards with four par 4's over 500 yards, Bethpage will be countered with graduated roughs, wider fairways, and non-progressing course conditions throughout the week. One controversial course condition from last year's Open that will remain are the soft bottomed bunkers Mike Davis implemented last year under the mentality that bunkers are meant to be hazards not retreats from those gargantuan roughs. One thing is for certain, the stage has been set once again for another dramatic week of US Open golf.
