The beauty of Crosswater made clear

The beauty of Crosswater can be hard to convey to the uninitiated. After all, there are only so many words that can describe the way the Robert E. Cupp Jr. design melds with the meadows and wetlands as the Deschutes and Little Deschutes rivers meander by.

The view of two juvenile bald eagles standing guard high over the par-3 13th hole — nicknamed “Osprey” for the nest perched on a nearby old growth ponderosa pine — is a testament to how the course has become a habitat for the indigenous wildlife.

Considered by Golf Digest to be among “America’s 100 Greatest,” there are reasons why Crosswater is thought to be the crown jewel of Sunriver Resort.

Conditions update: Sunriver Resort works to maintain superior conditioning

Golf course maintenance over the length of the season is filled with peaks and valleys. The Sunriver Resort maintenance staff spends all spring achingly preparing Caldera Links, Crosswater, Meadows and Woodlands for the crush of the peak summer season.

Then, as the warm, dry Sunriver summer sets in, the task becomes much simpler for Sunriver Resort Director of Agronomy Ryan Wulff and his staff.

“We are in maintenance mode right now,” Wulff said. “Our goal right now is to basically keep the golf courses where they are at in terms of conditioning.” That is an awfully high level of course conditioning. Of course, simple doesn’t necessarily mean easy.

During the summer, Crosswater’s greens are held at around 11 on the Stimpmeter. At Meadows and Woodlands, the green speeds are managed at a Stimp of about 10.

Sunriver staff heads to New York to ready for 2017 PGA Professional Championship

You probably haven’t had the pleasure of recently running into Josh Willis, Sunriver Resort’s director of golf.

Willis has not been on vacation. Along with a handful of other representatives from Sunriver, Willis has been busy back East at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York, for the 49th PGA Professional Championship. As always at the PPC, at stake for the more than 300 players in the field was a chance to be crowned the top club professional in the U.S. and a trip to the 2016 PGA Championship, making the annual golf event among the PGA of America’s most important.

But Willis, a PGA professional himself, was not there to compete. Instead, he was in New York to prepare for the 50th PGA Professional Championship, which Crosswater Club and the Meadows Course will host in June 2017.

Though Sunriver has gotten quite adept at hosting high-profile golf Championships, this year’s PPC represented an opportunity to meet and speak with the organizers as well as offering another look at all that is involved in hosting a Championship of this stature (the PPC is broadcast nationally on the Golf Channel).
