SUNRIVER AIRPORT SET TO UNDERGO $700,000 RUNWAY EXPANSION AND RE-PAVING PROJECT
(SUNRIVER, Ore.)-The Sunriver Airport, one of the busiest private airports west of the Mississippi River, will receive a new runway as the result of a project set to begin on Monday, April 13. The $702,000 project, which includes tearing up, widening and resurfacing the existing 5,500-foot long by 70-foot wide lighted runway, is expected to be complete by April 29. During construction, the runway will be widened to 75 feet and the airport will be closed to flight operations.
The airport was built by the developers of Sunriver Resort nearly 40 years ago to increase the resort's appeal as a fly-in destination. It sees the majority of its use from a mix of residents, resort guests and families, and group/conference clientele who enjoy the convenience of being able to fly directly to the resort rather than to Roberts Field or Bend Municipal Airport.
"There's a huge convenience factor associated with the airport that makes Sunriver Resort so appealing to many guests," said airport manager Stephanie Hartung.
Beginning April 13, construction crews from Hooker Creek will pulverize the existing runway surface, recycle those materials by mixing them into the existing gravel base, re-compact the runway base, apply a new layer of asphalt surfacing, and apply new runway markings. The new runway has been designed to handle larger and heavier aircraft, and will create a better experience for fly-in guests. The project is being entirely funded by the airport owners including Destination Hotels & Resorts, which also owns and manages Sunriver Resort.
According to the FAA and the Oregon Department of Aviation, the Sunriver Airport handles approximately 20,000 flight operations (takeoffs and/or landings) annually, ranging from small single engine propeller planes and large private jets, to helicopters and gliders. That's enough to make it among the West's busiest private airports.
"With the advancing age of the pavement and the extremes in weather to which it is exposed, the existing runway has reached its full life expectancy," said Steven Runner, Vice President of Development for Sunriver Resort. "By the end of April when this project wraps up, the Sunriver Airport will be considered among the region's finest private runways."
