Destination Guide

There is lot to do in our Oregon vacation destination. If you only have a long weekend or three days to spend in Sunriver, don't fret! We've pulled together a fantastic three-day itinerary for you including some of the very best Sunriver activities and sights.

With 33 miles of bike trails, nationally renowned geologic features, pristine rivers, lakes and more - Sunriver Resort is base camp to Oregon adventure. This 3-day itinerary is just a sample of everything Sunriver offers.

3 Days in Sunriver

Day 1:

Time to hit the ground running… or peddling. With over 35 miles of paved bike paths throughout Sunriver, one of the best ways to explore the area is on two wheels. Stop by the Sunriver Bike Barn to rent bikes for the whole family! While on your bike path tour, swing by the Lodge to grab a snack from The Merchant Trader Café, or play a quick round on the nine-hole Meadow’s Putting Course. Or if you’re up for a full round, you can take on the Meadows or Woodlands 18-hole golf courses. You bring the friendly competition; we’ll supply the putters, clubs and golf balls.

Plan a laidback and casual dinner at The Owl’s Nest, a family-friendly restaurant located in the Lodge. Enjoy a flight of award-winning Northwest microbrews and mouth-watering pub food, featuring the popular Owl’s Nest Burger and delicious Fish n’ Chips. Come cheer on your favorite sports teams or simply take in the spectacular views of the meadow and beautiful Central Oregon scenery from the expansive outdoor, heated deck. A perfect place to sit back and settle in to your Sunriver vacation.

After dinner, enjoy an evening of wonder and exploration at the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver. Staff and volunteers provide a relaxed, fun, and educational atmosphere for viewing the starry night skies. Sunriver's elevation, pitch-dark surroundings, and crystal clear air make it perfect for stargazing. At the Oregon Observatory, you won't be lining up just for one quick peek. They have dozens of telescopes set up for your enjoyment so you can gaze at galaxies, discover deep space stars, and look upon the rings of Saturn. With the largest public access viewing facility in the country, there is plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the amazing spectacle.

Day 2:

Indulge in a fresh Northwest breakfast or brunch on the deck of the Meadows at The Lodge. Watch the early morning fog lift off the beautiful golf greens, or try to spy one of the many wildlife visitors through the large bay windows. Enjoy your meal while taking in the scenic views of Mt. Bachelor and the Sunriver property. As you are finishing up breakfast, be sure to ask the friendly Meadows staff to prepare box lunches for you and your family to enjoy during your Central Oregon adventures today.

Make your way five minutes north of Sunriver and visit the Lava Lands Visitor Center, the interpretive hub of Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Friendly rangers will help plan your excursion using their new 3D topographic map. Visit the state of the art interpretive exhibit, view a variety of films scheduled daily, walk through amazing geological lava displays, picnic under the pines, attend a ranger talk, and then top it all off with a drive to the top of Lava Butte for a spectacular view of Central Oregon.

Ready for a cool down? Embrace the summer sun and enjoy a refreshing family float trip down the Deschutes River. Whether you wish to canoe, kayak, paddle board, or raft, we’ve got you covered. The Sunriver Marina has all the gear to make your water adventure a great one.  Need a lesson? Group classes are offered daily and our friendly staff is ready to help float you in the right direction.

For an unforgettable dinner, visit The Grille at Crosswater. With its exceptional location and beautiful views, this is the perfect representation of a true Northwest lodge. Innovative and inspired Chef Jason Greene offers his incredibly diverse menu of New American cuisine, utilizing only the finest fresh local ingredients available. The menu demonstrates the ideal infusion of robust flavors paired with Northwest ingredients. Your hardest decision will be deciding what to try first.

Day 3:

After having breakfast at one of Sunriver Resort’s delectable restaurants and checking out, give your vacation a proper sendoff with an authentic trail ride at the Sunriver Stables. These guided rides will take you throughout the Sunriver property, which boasts scenic views of Mt. Bachelor and the Deschutes River. This is truly an unforgettable experience for all ages, and one that you will remember for years to come.

On your travels north, don’t miss stopping at the High Desert Museum. This amazing interactive experience is not what you would expect from your typical museum. Here, they truly bring the high desert to life with engaging exhibits, fascinating wildlife displays, living history and riveting daily programs. With a walk through rendition of an old mine, live animal exhibits, and a working sawmill, the High Desert Museum offers an environment unlike any other. Only ten minutes from Sunriver Resort, this museum is a must see experience while vacationing in Central Oregon!
